CAPP . . .

  •     Publishes a free newspaper, Rogers Park 2000

  •    Assists community policing advocates in order to increase public safety.

  •    Initiates organizing campaigns.

  •    Supports community improvements such as neighborhood planning and recreation centers.

Community Awareness and Pride Program is the organizing arm of the RPCC. Although named in 1987, CAPP activities are at the root of the RPCC's history.  Our activities have ranged from demonstrative actions to an overall plan for the future development of Rogers Park. The RPCC has taken public stands relating to zoning, recreational land use, and open housing.  Some of our successes include:

  • Supported community efforts to bring a community center to Gale School Park.   RPCC served as the fiscal agent of a $700,000 Illinois First grant to support construction.  Illinois Senator Carol Ronen and Representative Julie Hamos asked RPCC to facilitate the grant in order to put the community at the negotiating table.   Today, plans are being finalized and construction of a 16,000 square foot building is anticipated to begin in 2004.

  • Initiated a comprehensive community plan, "Rogers Park in the Year 2000". This plan sets forth specific goals for the community in areas such as housing, zoning, parks, and land use. For eighteen months, the RPCC held community forums to obtain recommendations from residents. (1995)

  • Organized "Operation Brown Bag It", which saw 1500 mini-grocery bags sent to Illinois Governor Jim Edgar in support of neighborhood efforts to bring a full-service grocery store to Rogers Park. (1994)

  • A leader bringing community policing to Rogers Park and organized the Rogers Park Block Organization Network (1993)

  • Organized a city-wide coalition that improved the way liquor licenses are issued and renewed. (1990)

Highlights and Successes:

Rogers Park 2000 – the newspaper.  Rogers Park 2000 is a community-based newspaper prepared and distributed by the Rogers Park Community Council.  RP2000 was designed to discuss neighborhood issues as well as market the Community Council, Rogers Park, and other community organizations.  Ten thousand copies of the newspaper are published quarterly and are placed in 50 businesses for free pick-up by our neighbors.  Additionally, the publication is mailed to the homes of RPCC members.   In December, RP2000 is mailed free to every household in Rogers Park -- 30,000 copies!  During the year, more than 40 volunteers assist with writing of the various articles.  Thirty local businesses advertise in RP2000.

Supporting Neighborhood Organizations.   As one of the larger community-based organizations in Rogers Park, the RPCC provides support and resources for many local initiatives.
